To date, most research examining the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system has focused on incarceration rates in correctional settings.  However, this focus disregards the other actors within the criminal justice system who also play a crucial role in Indigenous peoples’ involvement in the legal system more broadly. As such, the NSWPF is interested research into the Indigenous peoples’ experiences with the police across different national and international settings, highlighting any similarities and/or differences evident.

NSWPF is particularly interested in research into:

1. Identify new and existing policing practices, training and procedures that can assist in reducing Indigenous youth contact with the criminal justice system.

2.2 How can NSWPF best partner with indigenous communities and other public sector agencies to reduce Indigenous youth contact with police and the criminal justice system.

2.3 What is the right approach for Australian law enforcement agencies in achieving the "Closing the Gap" objectives for Indigenous peoples whilst maintaining the core functions of policing? What is the right balance?

2.4 Identify current diversion programs available to Indigenous youth in NSW and evaluate their effectiveness across a range of desirable outcomes.
