Do I need a licence for fireworks in NSW?
It is illegal to buy, possess or discharge fireworks in NSW unless you have a pyrotechnicians licence or fireworks (single use) licence (FSUL).
Fireworks are not toys – they are classified as explosives due to their potential to cause serious injury or death and should only be handled by licensed and trained professionals.
Using fireworks without a licence risks an on-the-spot fine of up to $2000 with penalties ranging up to $27,500 for displaying fireworks without a licence. Selling or purchasing fireworks without a licence can also result in fines of $27,000 and 12-months gaol.
In addition to this, SafeWork NSW has the authority to issue on-the-spot fines of up to $2000 and individuals caught supplying explosives to minors (persons under 18 years of age) will be fined $1500.
Anyone with information on the illegal use or sale of fireworks can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report anonymously directly to SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50 or via Speak Up Saves Lives.
