Charges laid after four people killed in car crash - near Dubbo

A man has been charged after four people died in a two-vehicle crash in the state’s west last week.

About 9.20pm on Friday 27 September 2024, emergency services were called to the Newell Highway, Tomingley, approximately 35 kilometres south of Dubbo, following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District attended the scene and found a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Hiace van had collided.

Two men who were in the utility - aged 19 and 18 - and a man and a woman, who were in the van - both aged 57 – all died at the scene. They are yet to be formally identified.

A 23-year-old male driver of the ute was taken to Dubbo Hospital with suspected leg injuries.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Police established a crime scene, and with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit, commenced inquiries into the crash.

Following an investigation, police arrested the 23-year-old man yesterday (Monday 30 September 2024) after he was discharged from hospital.

He was taken to Dubbo Police Station and charged with four counts of dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, driver not wear seatbelt properly adjusted and fastened and drive with two passenger seatbelt/restraint not properly fastened.

The man was given conditional bail to appear before Dubbo Local Court on Monday 21 October 2024.
