Man charged following fatal crash - St Marys (Critical incident)

A man will appear in court today after being charged following a fatal crash at St Marys.

About 4am Tuesday (22 October 2024), two officers in a fully-marked police vehicle saw a dark-grey Holden Insignia sedan on Putland Street at St Marys.

The driver of the car has accelerated towards the Great Western Highway before officers lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, police found the sedan had hit a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback. The driver of the Holden had allegedly fled the scene on foot.

The male driver of the Toyota, aged 49, died at the scene. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

The 43-year-old male driver of the Holden was arrested a short time later on Chapel Street, St Mary’s.

He was taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard.

A critical incident investigation was declared following the crash.

Police established a crime scene, with a critical incident team from North Shore Police Area Command commencing an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.

About 6pm yesterday (Wednesday 23 October 2024), the 43-year-old man was released from hospital and taken to St Marys Police Station.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, negligent driving (occasioning death), drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

He was refused bail to appear before Mt Druitt Local Court today (Thursday 24 October 2024).
