Police vehicles struck, man charged after pursuit at Batemans Bay

Two police vehicles have been damaged and a man has been charged following a pursuit at Batemans Bay yesterday.
Officers attached to the South Coast Police District's Proactive Crime Team – Batemans Bay – attempted to stop an SUV after 5pm (Wednesday 31 October 2024), after it was reported to be driven allegedly at high speed on Gregory Street.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated, taken over by Batemans Bay Highway Patrol. The SUV was driven into a vacant property before allegedly hitting two police vehicles. The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to the manner of driving.
The SUV was found in bushland a short time later and the alleged driver, a 23-year-old man, arrested.
He was taken to Batemans Bay Hospital for mandatory testing, before being taken to Batemans Bay Police Station where he was charged with five offences,
• Police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly
• Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
• Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc.
• Licence expired, and
• Use unregistered vehicle.
The man, from Nowra Hill, was refused bail to appear before Batemans Bay Local Court today (Thursday 31 October 2024).
