Man charged over alleged attempted robbery - Newcastle

A man has been charged over an alleged attempted robbery in Newcastle on Friday.
About 7.30am on Friday 8 November 2024, police were called to Perkins Street, Newcastle, following reports of an attempted robbery.
At the scene, police were told that a man was standing near his car when he was approached by an unknown man who allegedly demanded keys to the vehicle while armed with a syringe.
The owner of the vehicle moved away while the man allegedly entered the vehicle and attempted to start it.
The owner of the vehicle, still in possession of the keys, locked the man in the car and called police.
Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District responded and arrested the man following a brief struggle.
Police will allege in court that the same man attempted to enter the vehicle of a woman a short time earlier.
A subsequent search of the man's possessions allegedly revealed an amount of methamphetamine, and ID and bank cards believed to be stolen.
The 25-year-old man was charged with seven offences at Newcastle Police Station:
- Aggravated assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle armed with weapon,
- Stalk/intimidate intent fear physical etc harm,
- Enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner/occupier,
- Assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm,
- Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty,
- Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, and
- Possess prohibited drug.
He was refused bail to appear before Paramatta Local Court on Saturday 9 November 2024, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 21 November 2024.
