Teens charged over alleged pursuit - Wollongong

A teenage boy and girl will appear before court today charged following an alleged pursuit this morning from Wollongong to Sydney’s south west.
Officers attached to Wollongong Police District commenced an investigation following a report of a stealing and an assault at a convenience store on Keira Street, Wollongong, about 12.20am (Thursday 21 November 2024).
Police were told three people entered the store and allegedly took items without paying before assaulting two employees – aged 26 and 28 – and leaving in a van with no number plates.
Both men sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
About 12.40am, police sighted a the van on Endeavor Drive, Wollongong.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle; however, when the driver failed to stop as directed a pursuit was initiated.
The vehicle allegedly continued along Endeavour Drive before turning onto Cliff Road and continuing along Bourke Street towards Flinders Street.
The vehicle continued north along Mount Ousley Road before exiting onto Picton Road and heading back towards Mount Ousley Road before road spikes were successfully deployed on Appin Road by officers attached to Campbelltown City Police Area Command.
The vehicle continued along Copperfield Drive, Rosemeadow, before it left the roadway where an unknown person leapt from the vehicle. The van was driven along Dickens Road, Ambarvale, before returning to Copperfield Drive.
Road spikes were successfully deployed a second time on Englorie Park Drive but the van continued through a number of local streets before stopping at the intersection of Campbelltown and Collieroy roads, Campbelltown where the van was allegedly driven at a police road block causing significant damage to two police vehicles.
Officers attached to Wollongong Police District and Campbelltown City Police Area Command arrested a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl.
They were taken to Campbelltown Police Station where the boy was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, shoplifting, assault occasion actual bodily harm in company of others, and police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously.
The girl was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and shoplifting.
They were refused bail and will appear before a children’s court today (Thursday 21 November 2024).
