Ten people charged as Operation Surge concludes - Chifley PD

Police have conducted a two-day high-visibility operation proactively disrupting crime and targeting alleged offenders in the Western Region this week.

From Tuesday 26 November 2024 to Wednesday 27 November 2024, Operation Surge saw police officers attached to Chifley Police District saturate the streets of Bathurst, Lithgow, and Cowra targeting drug, property, and firearm related offences.

Throughout the operation, the local police were assisted by specialist officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad, Western Region Operational Support Group and Regional Enforcement Squad, Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, Chifley Highway Patrol, Chifley Rural Crime Prevention Team and Correctives NSW, and Special Operations Group K9 Unit.

Results from Operation Surge include,

- 12 Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) searches,

- 9 search warrants executed,

- 5 bail-compliance checks,

- 40 cannabis plants seized,

- Drugs seized include Cannabis, Methylamphetamine, MDMA and GHB,

- 4 unauthorised firearms seized,

- 4 prohibited weapons seized,

- 14 RBTs and 2 RDTs conducted,

- 13 traffic infringements notices,

- 10 people charged with over 20 offences.

Incidents of note included,

· About 8.30am on Tuesday (26 November 2024), police executed a search warrant at a home on Rocket Street, West Bathurst. During the search, police located and seized a medical prescription book, collectable coins alleged to be stolen and a prohibited weapon. A 42-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were arrested at the scene. Both were taken to Bathurst Police Station, where the man was charged with possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit and goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not motor vehicle). He was granted conditional bail to appear before Bathurst Local Court on Wednesday 18 December 2024. The woman was charged with goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not motor vehicle) and granted conditional bail to appear before Bathurst Local Court on Wednesday 4 December 2024.

· About 9.50am on Tuesday (26 November 2024), police executed a search warrant at a home on Kanangra Street, Cowra. During the search, officers seized 27 cannabis plants, a sophisticated indoor hydroponic cannabis set up, knuckle dusters and ammunition. A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Cowra Police Station. He was charged with cultivate prohibited plant more than small and less than or equal to indictable quantity, supply prohibited drug more than small and less than or equal to indictable quantity, possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority. He was granted conditional bail to appear before Cowra Local Court on Wednesday 29 January 2024.

· About 11am on Tuesday (26 November 2024), police executed a search warrant at a home on Stewart Street, Mitchell. During the search, police located and seized a multiple prohibited drugs, mobile phones and $750 cash. A 40-year-old woman was arrested and taken to Bathurst Police Station, where she was charged with owner/occupier knowingly allow use as drug premises, supply prohibited drug more than small and less than or equal to indictable quantity, possess prohibited drug, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not motor vehicle), and recklessly deal with proceeds of crime less than or equal to $5000. She was granted conditional bail to appear before Bathurst Local Court on Wednesday 11 December 2024.
