Man charged after alleged siege - West Kempsey

A man has been charged after two people were injured during an alleged siege on the Mid North Coast.
About 2am yesterday (Sunday 15 December 2024), emergency services responded to reports that a man – who was allegedly armed with a machete – was holding two people against their will at a home on Keith Moses Crescent, West Kempsey.
Officers from Mid North Coast Police District secured a perimeter and requested the attendance of specialist police, including Police Negotiators and the Tactical Operations Unit.
Shortly after 2pm, officers forced entry to the premises and used a number of tactical options to take the man into custody, including the use of a Taser.
A 34-year-old man was taken to Kempsey Police Station where he was charged with eight offences,
- Take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage cause actual bodily harm (DV) (two counts)
- Reckless wounding (DV) (two counts)
- Use etc offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence (three counts), and
- Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.
He has been refused bail to appear before Kempsey Local Court today (Monday 16 December 2024).
The two people inside the home – a man and a woman aged in their 50s – suffered minor injuries.
Initial inquiries have led police to believe the people are known to each other.
