Man charged with allegedly using samurai sword to steal car - Orange

A man has been charged after he allegedly used a samurai sword to steal a car in Orange earlier this week.

About 7am Monday (30 December 2024), police were called to Currong Crescent, Orange, following reports of a motor vehicle theft.

Officers attached Central West Police District arrived and were told a man was driving a Hyundai SUV when he allegedly attempted to remove the owner of the car, a 37-year-old female passenger, from the vehicle with a samurai sword.

During the incident, police were told he allegedly assaulted the woman with the sword before driving off causing the woman to fall from the moving car.

The woman was not treated for any injuries.

A short time later, police located the allegedly stolen vehicle abandoned on Lawson Crescent, Orange.

The car was seized for forensic examination and an investigation was commenced into the incident.

Following investigations, about 7.10pm Tuesday (31 December 2024), police arrested a 21-year-old man at a home on Algona Crescent, Orange.

He was taken to Orange Police where he was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon, aggravated assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle armed with weapon and leaner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester.

The man was refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Local Court yesterday (Wednesday 1 January 2025), where he was further refused bail to appear before Orange Local Court on Thursday 9 January 2025.
