Inquiry underway after aircraft crashes south of Nambucca Heads

A police operation has resumed to recover a microlight aircraft which crashed in the sea south of Nambucca Heads yesterday.
Emergency services were alerted about 4pm (Saturday 4 January 2024), when a light aircraft was seen crashing into the ocean about 1km east of Gumma.
Officers from Mid North Coast Police District and Marine Area Command attended the scene assisted by members of Marine Rescue NSW and Surf Life Saving NSW.
The pilot and passenger died at the scene, with the body of a man recovered from the plane yesterday; a second body was recovered a short time ago. They are yet to be formally identified.
The operation to recover the aircraft from Scotts Head Beach is now underway.
The investigation into the incident is being conducted by detectives attached to Marine Area Command who have confirmed the aircraft left a private airfield at Coffs Harbour about 3.30pm yesterday with two men on board.
Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
