Driver charged following alleged stolen car pursuit - Wollongong

A man will face court tomorrow charged after an alleged pursuit in the state’s Illawarra.
About 7.30am today (Thursday 16 January 2025), officers attached to Wollongong Traffic and Highway patrol attempted to stop an allegedly stolen utility on the Princes Highway, North Wollongong.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.
The utility continued onto Memorial Drive before taking the on-ramp exit towards the M1 Princes Motorway where the car crashed into the concrete barrier on the hairpin bend.
NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated a 30-year-old male driver and a 38-year-old male passenger for chest and back injuries.
They were both arrested and taken to Wollongong Hospital under police guard.
Upon his release, the 30-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with:
• Police pursuit – not stop - drive dangerously
• Class A m/v exceed speed more than 45km/h - estimated
• Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
• Negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm)
• Take and drive conveyance without consent of owner
• Never licensed person drive vehicle on road
• Drive contrary to direction of traffic lane arrow – m/v
• Drive not in S-T-C/ave speed zone on/over solid edge line
• Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (m/v)
He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Friday 17 January 2025.
Investigations continue.
