Teens arrested for train buffer riding - Public Transport Command

Three teenage boys have been arrested for multiple incidents of buffer riding on Sydney trains, including across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

About 5pm on Sunday 19 January 2025, five teenagers were seen on CCTV to buffer ride on the rear of a train, northbound across the Harbour Bridge, and again yesterday, Monday 20 January 2025 at 4pm. Public Transport Command were notified.

Yesterday, at about 9:30pm, a 14-year-old boy was observed on CCTV buffer riding on the rear of a light rail tram on George Street. He fell from the moving tram but was uninjured.

Two 14-year-olds and a 13-year-old ran from the tram into World Square. A short time later Police located the boys in George Street.

The 13-year-old and one of the 14-year-olds stopped when directed; a search of one of the boys allegedly located two flathead screwdrivers.

The other 14-year-old boy was arrested at Haymarket after a foot pursuit.

All three boys were taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

The two 14-year-olds received Youth Cautions for Buffer Riding and Possession of Housebreaking Implements. The 13-year-old was issued a warning under the Young Offenders Act.

Police would like to speak to two other teenagers as part of the ongoing investigation
