Critical incident declared following fatal crash near Orange

A critical incident investigation has commenced following a fatal two-vehicle crash near Orange today.

About 8.25am (Saturday 8 February 2025), officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District were called to the Mitchell Highway at Larras Lee – about 50km north of Orange – following reports of a single vehicle crash involving a heavy vehicle.

The driver suffered minor injuries.

Police remained at the scene waiting for the vehicle to be towed, when about 10.50am, a motorcyclist travelling nearby fell off his motorbike, before a second motorcyclist collided with the first rider.

The officers at the scene went to the assistance of the first rider; however, he died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified; however, is believed to be aged in his 40’s.

The second rider – a 69-year-old man – was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Westmead Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A crime scene has been established with specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attending to examine the scene.

A critical incident investigation team from Chifley Police District will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
