A man has been charged over alleged drug and driving offences following an investigation by Newcastle City Highway Patrol.
About 7.20pm on Tuesday 4 February 2025, police were called to Violet Town Road, Tingira Heights, following reports a car had crashed into a fence.
Police attended and located a Ford Ranger utility parked at the scene.
A police officer approached the vehicle and attempted to speak with the driver when the vehicle reversed and the officer was struck by the side mirror of the utility, resulting in bruising.
The officer instructed the driver to stop; however, the driver left the scene in the utility and inquiries into the incident commenced.
About 2.15pm yesterday (Monday 17 February 2025), police stopped a Volkswagen Golf in Perkins Street, Newcastle.
Police will allege that the driver of the vehicle was the same driver of the Ford Ranger at the incident on Tuesday 4 February 2025.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police allegedly located and seized a knife, a baseball bat, three resealable bags of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, and a bag containing three pills.
A 22-year-old man was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station.
There he was charged with eight offences:
- Not stop vehicle when directed to do so
- Cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
- Use Class A vehicle number plate obscured/defaced
- Possess/attempt to, prescribed restricted substance
- Possess prohibited drug (two counts)
- Custody of knife in public place
He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court today (Tuesday 18 February 2025).
