A teenager has been charged with being armed with an axe after the pursuit of an allegedly stolen car which crashed on the South Coast today.

About 3.50am (Saturday 5 April 2025), police were called to a home in Moruya, following reports a utility had been stolen from the property.

About 4.15am officers attached to South Coast Police District sighted the ute travelling on George Bass Drive, Tomakin.

Police directed the driver to stop; however, when they allegedly failed to do so a pursuit was initiated.

During the pursuit the ute allegedly reached speeds of 110km/h in 80km/h marked speed zones before police terminated due to safety concerns.

Police continued to observe the vehicle before it crashed into a tree in Escape Place, Malua Bay, after attempting to reverse out of the cul-de-sac.

The alleged driver of the ute – a 16-year-old boy – was not injured and was arrested at the scene before being taken to Batemans Bay Police Station.

During the arrest, police located an axe and personal items alleged to have been stolen from the Moruya home.

The teen was charged with drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, police pursuit not stop drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, larceny, carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, unlicensed for vehicle, drive while low range PCA.

The 16 year old was refused bail to appear before Children’s Court today before being granted conditional bail to appear before a different Children’s Court on Monday 14 April 2025.
