Man charged with manslaughter and driving offences following a crash near Albury

A man has been charged with manslaughter following a crash in West Albury, earlier this year.

About 2pm on Friday 21 February 2025, emergency services responded to Pemberton Street, West Albury, near Somerset Drive, following a two-vehicle crash.

Police allege the utility struck the other vehicle, shunting it into a fence.

The 33-year-old male driver of the utility was taken to Albury Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

The 19-year-old female driver, who was pregnant, was treated for injuries to her stomach, back and shoulder. She was taken to Albury Base Hospital, where she gave birth. The woman and her baby were later transferred to a hospital in Melbourne. Her 41-year-male passenger was also taken to Albury Base Hospital for elbow injuries.

Officers attached to Murray River police District responded and established a crime scene.

Following inquiries, police conducted a further search of the vehicle and allegedly seized drugs, drug paraphernalia, $6,300 cash, knuckledusters and number plates from the utility.

On Wednesday 26 February, officers were notified by the hospital, the baby had died.

About 9.10am, on Wednesday 26 February 2025, officers attached to Murray River Police District attended a unit in Maher Street, Deniliquin and arrested the 33-year-old man.

Police allegedly seized from the unit drugs, $2800 cash, a mobile phone and number plates, which police will allege were stolen.

He was taken to Deniliquin Police Station and charged with three counts of supply prohibited drug, three counts of possess prohibited drug, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, two counts of recklessly deal with proceeds of crime <=$5000, possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty and breach of bail.

He was refused bail and appear before Albury Local Court on Thursday 27 February 2025, where was formally refused bail.

Following further inquiries, today (Tuesday 15 April 2025), detectives attached to Murray River Police District attended a correctional centre in Junee and issued the man with a court attendance notice for manslaughter, aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death-influence drug or drugs, aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm-influence drug or drugs and drive vehicle under influence of drugs.

He remains in custody and will appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on Monday 28 April 2025.
