Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives charge man over 2021 $1 million silver heist

A man will appear in court today charged by Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives following an investigation into the theft of $1 million worth of silver bullion from a truck travelling between Sydney and Melbourne in 2021.

Between 4.30pm on Friday 26 and 8am on Monday 29 November 2021, a consignment of 960kg of silver bullion was allegedly stolen from a truck while in transit from Maldon, near Picton, to Melbourne in Victoria.

Upon arrival in Melbourne, the theft was discovered and officers from Camden Police Area Command were notified.

The consignment – 192 individual 5kg bars of silver bullion – was estimated to be worth $1,015,000 in 2021 and over $1.4 million today.

Following initial investigations by local police, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Caimon.

Following extensive investigations, including multiple appeals for information, a 40-year-old man was arrested at a Wee Jasper property about 8.45am yesterday (Tuesday 9 July 2024.

He was taken to Yass Police Station and strike force detectives executed search warrants at Bargo and Tahmoor property seizing electronic devices and business records for forensic examination.

The man has since been charged with larceny and armed with intent to commit indictable offence.

He has been refused bail to appear before Goulburn Local Court today (Wednesday 10 July 2024).

The stolen silver has not been recovered, and detectives are still appealing for any information that may lead to its recovery.
