Important:
On 1 July 2022, the Commercial Agents and Private Inquiry Agents Act 2004 (CAPI) was repealed.
From that date:
- CAPI licences ceased to exist
- NSW Fair Trading became responsible for the licensing of commercial agents
- SLED remains responsible for the licensing of private inquiry agents, which are now known as private investigators - a new subclass of security licence.
If you have a CAPI operator licence with private inquiry agent activities, it has automatically become a Class 2E (Private Investigator) security licence. CAPI Master licences authorising private inquiry agent activities have automatically become Master security licences. See the fact sheets below for more information.
If you would like to apply for a Class 2E (Private Investigator) security licence, you can find more information here.
Individuals who previously held a CAPI licence with commercial agent activities, and those who would like to apply for a commercial agent licence, should contact NSW Fair Trading to discuss licensing requirements.
See the SLED Latest News item from 4 April 2022 for more information.
