Australian citizenship or permanent residency

Applicants must be either an Australian citizen (by birth, naturalisation or citizenship) or be a current Australian permanent resident. You will need to provide supporting documentation which proves your citizenship or permanent residency status with your application.

Born in Australia

Your proof of citizenship is your full Australian birth certificate:

  • if you were born before 20 August 1986 OR
  • if you were born after 20 August 1986, you would also need to provide one (1) of the following:
    • current Australian Passport OR
    • evidence demonstrating at least one of your parents was an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of your birth.

Born overseas

You will need to provide your overseas birth certificate, and:

  • if you have been granted Australian Citizenship, your Australian Citizenship certificate or current Australia passport OR
  • if you hold a current Australian permanent residency visa, your:
    • foreign passport, and
    • Australian permanent residency visa documentation.
